In ShipIntel you can monitor vessel traffic in ports and areas as well as adding notifications to your vessels and vessel lists.

ShipIntel's feature; Port & Area Monitoring is a feature included in both ShipIntel Essentials and in ShipIntel Pre-fix. The feature lets you monitor and analyze vessels' activities in ports, areas and when crossing lines. Create unlimited port lists with notifications for vessels and ports.

In this guide, we'll show how to use and benefit from ShipIntel's Port & Area Monitoring.

Key Features of the Port & Area Monitoring Feature

Included in ShipIntel Essentials and ShipIntel Pre-fix

The Port & Area Monitoring feature is included in both ShipIntel solutions.

Port and Anchorage Activity Monitoring

Analyze vessel activities and the congestion at anchorages and ports.

Detailed Port Statistics

Deep dive into comprehensive port statistics like median time in port per segment.

Customize Notifications

Get alerts when specific vessels set a destination or later change it, when they arrive or depart anchorages and ports or passing lines.

Live AIS Port Traffic

View vessels at anchorage and ports in tables or visualized in your map. Find historical port arrivals and departures. Filter by segments or periods of time.

Area Statistics

Analyze activities in pre-defined areas like canals, EEZ, ECA, and shipping areas.

Crossing Lines Statistics & Monitoring

Find which and how many vessels have crossed specific lines (e.g. Passero and the Strait of Gibraltar), during the last 24 hours. Receive alerts when vessels cross the lines.



Getting started - How to add Ports, Areas and Crossing Lines

Adding Ports

  • Navigate to the Port statistics tab

  • In the top-left corner, click the "Add port" button to add a port

  • Search for a port in the pop-up search window

  • Select the port from the search results

    • You can add several ports.

Adding Areas

  • Navigate to the Area statistics tab

  • In the top-left corner, click the "Add area" button to add an area

  • From the pop-up area window, use the dropdown menu to select type of area you want to monitor

  • Once you have selected a type of area, select the specific area by

    • Selecting from the list

    • Using the search bar above to search for your desired area

    • Clicking on the area from the map

  • Tick off the area to add it.

    • You can add several areas

Adding Crossing Lines

  • Navigate to the Crossing lines tab

  • In the top-left corner, click the "Add lines" button to add a line

  • Scroll through the list, search for a crossing line using the search bar or click on a line from the map

  • Click on the line to add it

    • You can add several lines

Port statistics

From the port statistics tab, you can see a list of your ports to the left, and statistics for the selected port to the right.

Overview

The overview will show the most essential information about the selected port, such as the port's name, UN/LOCODE, timezone and types of vessels typically visiting the port

Statistics

This section shows different statistics about the port. Details displayed with graphs and tables, provide information about:

  • Vessels in (the) port: The number of vessels that have visited the port during the selected time period, segmented by vessel type.

  • Vessels at anchorage

  • Median time in port: The median time (in hours) that vessels spent in this port before departing.

  • Median time at anchor

You can filter to view only statistics on a specific vessel segment. To do this, click on the "All vessels" drop-down menu to the right, to select the type of vessel you want to see port statistics for.

Detailed statistics

Click on one of the tables to view more details.

The line chart - as in the example above - shows the number of vessels that have visited the port during the selected time period, categorized by vessel segment.

  • You can select which segments you want to hide or show in the top left corner by clicking on the segment.

  • Adjust data resolution: Data is available in different resolutions. You can select the resolution you want to see from the top of the window, or by setting the to-from dates in the calendar.

Live AIS of Port

The live AIS map shows the port’s location and the vessels that are currently in the port. The different colors represent different vessel types.

Area Statistics

From the Area statistics tab, you can see a list of your areas to the left, along with information and statistics for the selected area to the right.

The map shows a highlight of the area along the the vessels that are currently in the area. The data is updated every 10 minutes. The different colors represent different vessel types.

Vessels in area

Under Vessels in area, you will see graphs and table with statistics on the number of vessels in the selected area.

  • Click on the graph to see more details.

  • Select and deselect the vessels you want to analyse by clicking on the vessel segment at the top

  • Set the time frame by

    • Selecting a to-from date in the calendar, or by

    • Dragging the slider at the bottom left and right

Crossing Lines

This section shows statistics of vessels crossing the line in either direction over time based on historical AIS data.

Live overview

The live overview section shows the line on a map and the vessels that have recently crossed in either direction based on live AIS data.

Statistics

The charts shows the number of vessels that have crossed the line during the selected time period categorized by vessel segment. You can select which segments you want to hide or show in the top left corner.

  • More details: Click to view statistics further back than the last month per vessel segment.

  • Adjust data resolution: Data is available in different resolutions. You can select the resolution you want to see from the options at the top of the details statistics screen
