ShipAtlas always chooses the shortest route for you. Yet, sometimes it is not the shortest route we want. That is why ShipAtlas allows you to edit the original route suggested for your vessel. This is possible both with the FREE, Standard, and Premium plans, but with the premium plan, ShipAtlas allows you to create duplicates of your route instead of having to make adjustments to the original one.

In this guide you can learn and read more about:

How to Make Adjustments to Your Route

Hold the line and drag it to the place you want to be included in your new route. By doing this you are adding a new point in your route which will appear in the sea route calculator.

If you have the Premium Plan, however, there are more options for you within the sea route calculator.

How to Duplicate Your Route

Step 1

You can duplicate your route by clicking on the "Duplicate" button on your card.

Step 2

When you edit the duplicate you will be able to see the original ShipAtlas route in the background of your new route.

Step 3

Save your new route or update your old one by clicking on the "Save routes" button at the lower-left corner of your screen. If it is new, give your route a name and save it by clicking the "Done" button.

How to Optimize Your Routes

Comparing Different Vessels with the Same Ports

The duplicate feature has more than one use case. You can for example compare the route you have created with another vessel, just change the vessel in the duplicated journey. You can compare as many vessels as you would like.

You now have two or more cards that you can alternate between to compare vessels' ETA to a port or several ports.

If you want to see more details about the journey, click on "More Details".

Note that: If you remember to save your routes and the changes you make, you can come back later to check if the ETA on one or both of the vessels has changed.

Comparing Different Ports with the Vessel

You can also use the duplicate function to compare the ETA of the same vessel to two different ports. Create a duplicate of your route and change the destination in the duplicated voyage.

Comparing Different Route Alternatives

If you create a route from a vessel to a port where there are different alternative routes to the port, ShipAtlas will choose the shorter route. The alternative route will also be shown on the map. If the shortest route is via a canal, which most of them are, you will be given the option of avoiding the canal.

You can make this change by clicking on "Options" in the sidebar menu and selecting your preferred route.

If you want to compare the two routes, duplicate the first card and then choose to avoid the canal on the duplicated card.

Remember that you can see the details of each voyage by clicking "More Details" at the top of the route calculator.
