It is important to deepen your knowledge about the product you use; therefore, in this guide, you can learn more about what each layer represents and means!

In total, ShipAtlas offers 10 map layers for you to stay informed at all times:

Good to know:

  • Map layers are not available when choosing the satellite map style.

  • With ShipAtlas, you can add multiple map layers at a time!

ECA/SECA ZONES

ECA/SECA stands for Emission Control Area/Sulphur Emission Control Area.

As of 1st January 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enforced the Sulphur Emission Regulations which require that all ships reduce their Sulphur emissions from 3,5 % to 0,5% in all of the world's seas.

The implementation of the global 0.50% Sulphur limit has not changed the requirements applicable to the four ECAs designated under Regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI. So in the North American, US Caribbean, the North Sea, and the Baltic 0,10% Sulphur limit continues to apply. In addition, several countries have implemented even stronger limits in their ECA/SECA zones. To find the applicable regulation just click on the highlighted sone to get the specific requirements.

INL

The International Navigating Limits (INL) define the geographical limits within which ships can operate without incurring additional insurance premiums from hull and machinery and other relevant underwriters. To get specific information about the limits, you can click on each area.

POLAR ZONES

The Polar Zones highlight the area covered by the IMO's polar water codes, which set rules for ships operating there. You can click on each zone to access more information.

SEA ICE

The Sea Ice map layer shows you the limits of the current sea ice.

It is updated from NSIDC daily.

CANALS

This map layer will highlight important canals on the map. When clicking the highlighted canal in the map you will see the applicable restrictions.

Note: You may need to zoom in on your ShipAtlas map to see this layer.

EEZ

This map layer displays the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of each country. You can view all zones at once or filter out specific countries. Click on different zones to get more information about them.

LOAD LINES

Clicking on a load line zone provides the dates when deadweight restrictions apply in that zone.

ANTI-SHIPPING ACTIVITY

Turning on this layer will highlight areas where anti-shipping incidents have taken place in the last 365 days. You can click on each highlight to get a description of the incident.

WAR ZONES

Enabling this layer will illuminate regions that pose a high risk for navigation or are designated as conflict zones. You can click on each zone to access their name.

WIND FARMS

Enabling this layer will illuminate wind farms located on the water. You can click on each wind farm to access their name.
